Juan Ignacio Arrieta
Most Rev. Juan Ignacio Arrieta Ochoa de Chinchetru, born in Vitoria, Spain, served as Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts from 2007 to 2026. He is Professor Emeritus of Canon Law and is the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome and of the Faculty of Canon Law of St. Pius X at the Patriarchal Seminary in Venice. Arrieta has held various academic posts and positions in the Holy See. He is a consultant to the Congregation De Propaganda Fide and a member of the College for Appeals on the Delicta Graviora, of the Disciplinary Commission of the Roman Curia, and of the College of Probiviri of the Labour Office of the Apostolic See. Arrieta is the author of over 300 studies, including monographs and manuals, journal articles, and editions of normative texts on canon law, ecclesiastical law, and Vatican law. On July 25, 2026, Pope Leo XIV named Bishop Arrieta as a member of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.
