The History of the Church begins with the story of God’s intervention into human history in Jesus Christ and continues through all major events in the Church’s history, including the Great Schism, the Reformation, and Counter-Reformation.  This text, complete with maps, timelines, and illustrations, places the Church in her context throughout history; furthering the salvific mission of Christ and explaining the role that the Church has played in shaping history and culture.

The closing of every chapter includes further readings and topics for discussion:

  • Supplementary Reading from Popes, Saints, and Church documents
  • Vocabulary, Study Questions and Practical Exercises
  • From the Catechism – pertinent reference going deeper into chapter topics

The History of the Church, the third title in The Didache Complete Course Series, is used by high schools, home school groups, and is also suitable for self-study.

The Didache Complete Course Series is comprised of four high-school level textbooks with accompanying Teacher Manuals and Student Workbooks, intended to be covered over the course of a full year.  All four textbooks are published with Ecclesiastical Approval and have been granted conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church by the USCCB Subcommittee on the Catechism.

Church History Well Done

I bought this after hearing Fr Ripperger recommend learning about church history. I am a convert from Protestantism and I know little about the church’s background. I chose this version of learning about the subject because it had a workbook and I thought it would be good to answer questions about the material I had read. I’ve read through most of the beginning and the first chapter. I love how it’s broken down in small sections with lots of informative pictures and maps. I often only have 5-10 minutes to spare so this is very helpful. I usually answer the questions as I’m reading each section and have only come across a handful of questions that require deductions based on what I read. The majority of the time the questions are directly captured from the text. I wish I could spend more time on the book. It’s a very good resource.

Excellent resource!

We are using this as our sophomore religion course. We used the Didache for freshman religion as well, but I did not have the workbook to go along. Using the workbook and text is wonderful!! The tests/quizzes that are included (with the teachers’ manual) are representative of the things that are taught in the chapter. So far (5 weeks) this has been a great class.
